Yggdrasil — the plant kingdom in text

An accessible, text-only index of the interactive tree above. It covers roughly 389,873 accepted species across the 479 families of land plants (Embryophyta) — from mosses and ferns through gymnosperms to the flowering plants — with ~14,135 genera. Species counts are accepted names from Kew's World Checklist of Vascular Plants; the classification follows APG IV and PPG I; divergence ages are crown estimates from the Jin & Qian (2022) dated megatree.

Notably, the largest family is Asteraceae (~35,483 species); the oldest surviving lineage here is Ginkgoaceae (crown ≈270 million years); the most widely distributed is Lycopodiaceae.
